Foster Families

First of all, Congratulations. As a foster parent, you are as valued and appreciated by us as you are by the children in your care. You're selfless act of caring for children is held in high esteem by us all.

As a foster care parent you are well aware of the responsibilities associated with the care of a child. You have undoubtedly been trained, but nothing can prepare anyone for taking on the care and nurturing of a child until your home is opened to them.

There are many ways in which you care for a child and without doubt, simply through your exhibited compassion, you are well prepared for the task. Education for your child is an essential component in their care. In many cases, the child comes into your home without your being familiar with prior school experiences. Your child may have a physical and/or emotional problem which has adversely affected their educational process. Your child may not have been "identified" as needing assistance in school. Or, an identification has been made and your not certain exactly what provisions are in place to assist them.

Over the years we have worked with governmental and private foster care agencies, as well as the individual foster care parents themselves. We review records to determine if there is a disability which has gone unidentified which is causing concerns in the academic area. We meet with you, the agency involved and the school to properly identify these children, prepare an educational program and preserve their rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504.

We have been fortunate to have been asked on numerous occasions to provide training to governmental agencies, professional organizations and private organizations. A few are listed below:

University of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry

Cardinal Hill Hospital

Shriners Hospital

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

Kentucky Partnership for Families and Children                        kidclr1.gif

Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Childrenkidclr4.gif

      Independence Place

      CHADD

      ARC of the Bluegrass

      Jefferson County Autism Society

It is critical that these children have the opportunities afforded to them to be successful in life, even under the most tragic of circumstances. Please give us a call or write in order that we may help you help our kids.
